waiting for the light

In time-honoured fashion, spring is confusing me - mad thunderstorms on Friday followed by beautifully balmy days which are in turn followed by the return of cold and rain. I'm having my usual annual inability to figure out what to wear.

But I'm waiting for the light - it appears now and then much as it does in my favourite Emily Dickinson poem:

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant --
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise

As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind --

There's birthdays and rugby games and opera premieres.

Felix turns 10 this Saturday, and we have tickets for the Bledisloe Cup match at Eden Park - my first live rugby game since I saw South Africa against Otago at the 'Brook in 1995. That game, my varsity mates dressed me as a 'rugby head' in Aertex, moleskins, RM Williams, pearls and a Drizabone. I didn't allow photos. I'll dress as me this time.

Wednesday 5 September is the world premiere of Len Lye: the Opera - which brings together an amazing creative team - Eve de Castro- Robinson's music, Roger Horrocks' libretto - in what promises to be a tour-de-force.

Allow yourself to be dazzled gradually as the light gets in.
